The Lake District in England is a magical place. Boasting spectacular scenery, pristine lakes, and picturesque towns, it’s a destination that offers an unforgettable experience. If you’re an adventurer at heart, look no further than Keswick. This charming market town located in the northern area of the Lake District has everything you need for a thrilling holiday. From water sports to hiking trails, the possibilities for outdoor activities are endless.

Conquer the Fells

Keswick’s location is ideal for mountain climbers, hikers and ramblers. The town is surrounded by stunning mountain ranges, including Skiddaw and Catbells, which provide spectacular views of the surrounding areas. There are hikes and trails suitable for all levels, from easy walks to challenging ascents. Skiddaw is the fourth-highest mountain in England and offers a more challenging hike. You can choose from many water activities, including kayaking, paddleboarding, and sailing. Derwentwater is the perfect spot to start water adventures. You can rent all types of equipment and enjoy the lake experience from a different perspective. For those who prefer a slower pace, fishing is a relaxing alternative that can be enjoyed all year round.

Explore the outdoors

If you’re looking for a more relaxed outdoor experience, Keswick has many options for you. The region is covered in parks and forests, and visitors can explore them on foot or by bike. Whinlatter Forest is the perfect place to experience Keswick’s beauty. With its many trails and greenery, it’s one of the top spots for Mountain Biking with several routes to choose from to match your skill and ability. Whinlatter Forest is also an excellent place for a picnic or a leisurely walk. The site also offers high ropes and zip lines for the more adventurous.

Visit the local towns and villages

While Keswick is the largest town in the area, there are several other towns and villages within close proximity that offer serene and picturesque views of the landscape. Ambleside is located on the shores of Lake Windermere and is known for its scenic mountain ranges and rustic architecture. Portinscale, Braithwaite, Applethwaite and Threlkeld are charming villages located nearby which provide an excellent opportunity for exploring.

You can visit museums and attractions in the town to learn about its past, including the Keswick Museum and Art Gallery, which showcases the history, art, and culture of the region. The Castlerigg Stone Circle, one of the most prominent stone circles in the UK, is located less than three miles from Keswick and is over 4,000 years old.

Keswick in the Lake District is a destination like no other. It offers adventurers an unparalleled experience and endless opportunities to explore the outdoors, discover history and culture, and enjoy water sports activities.

For the more leisurely traveller it has a great range of shops selling outdoor and local goods. There is a fantastic bookshop at the bottom of the town and lovely tearooms and cafes dotted around to help sustain your adventures.

When I visit I love to wander through the shopping area and visit the various shops, always picking up a few souvenirs. Keswick does have a good outdoors vibe. I will always wander down Lake Road and through the well kept Hope Park to my favourite spot of Crow Park. From here you have an unparalleled view of Derwentwater and Catbells. It’s just a wonderful place to relax for an hour or so. There’s a great street map here.
