With its ancient castles, pristine beaches, rolling hills, and winding rivers, Northumberland is a wonderland of outdoor activities and fascinating history. Whether you’re a seasoned adventurer or a beginner looking for a new challenge, Northumberland has something for everyone.

Ok, I am a little bias here. I’m a Geordie so have a soft spot for the NE! Miles of golden beaches, fantastic history and wonderful places to discover. I spent hours on trips to Hadrian’s Wall (Housesteads Roman Fort was a favourite) In this guide, I’ll take you through some of the must-see spots and hidden gems of this magical region.

Discover the Rich History of Northumberland

Northumberland is steeped in history and culture, and it’s impossible to visit the region without exploring some of its iconic landmarks. Head to Alnwick Castle, the famous setting of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter movies, and explore its stunning interiors and enchanting gardens. Don’t miss the chance to visit the historic Hadrian’s Wall, which spans 73 miles across the region and features some of the best-preserved Roman ruins in the country. If you’re looking for a more immersive experience, consider booking a guided tour of the wall’s most famous sites.

Immerse Yourself in Nature

Northumberland is home to some of the most stunning landscapes in England, and there are countless ways to explore them. Take a peaceful stroll along the miles of unspoiled beaches in the area, such as Bamburgh Beach or Druridge Bay – both of which offer incredible views and great surf. Go hiking in Northumberland National Park and explore the picturesque Cheviot Hills – perfect for beginners or seasoned walkers. Kayaking, paddleboarding, and other water sports are also popular options for adventure seekers.

Sample Delicious Local Cuisine

No trip to Northumberland is complete without experiencing the local cuisine. Try the famous Northumberland lamb, which is raised on the region’s lush grassland and is renowned for its flavour. For a true taste of the region, visit some of the farmers’ markets and food festivals that are scattered throughout the year. You’ll find everything from locally-caught fish to artisanal cheeses and craft beers.

Visit the Picturesque Towns and Villages

Northumberland is home to some charming towns and villages, each with its unique character and history. Explore the picturesque coastal village of Seahouses (famous for fantastic fish and chips), with its bustling harbour and quaint cottages. Visit the charming market town of Hexham, which boasts a stunning medieval abbey and fascinating archaeological sites. Wander the cobbled streets of Alnwick, which is lined with boutique shops, cafes and restaurants.

One of the places I really love is Warkworth. This was a place we visited a lot when I was younger. It has a fantastic Medieval Castle and the lovely 12 Century Church of St Lawrence. Warkworth sits in a loop of the River Coquet and one of my favourite pastimes when I am in the area is just to sit on the bank and relax, taking in the wonder of the local nature. Well worth a visit!

Experience the Magic of Dark Skies

Northumberland is one of the few places in Europe that has been designated as an International Dark Sky Park, meaning that it has exceptionally dark skies, ideal for stargazing. There are several observatories in the region, such as Kielder Observatory, which offers guided night tours and telescope workshops. You can also try wild camping in some of the remote locations to experience the magic of the region without any light pollution.

Northumberland is a treasure trove of adventures and experiences for all types of travellers. From the vibrant history of its landmarks to the peaceful beauty of its countryside, there are endless opportunities to explore this wonderful region. So pack your bags, get your hiking boots on, and get ready for a trip that you’ll never forget. Northumberland awaits! You won’t regret it!
